Dental and Medical Tourism in Medellín: Where to Stay While You Recover

If you're traveling to Medellín for dental, cosmetic or medical treatment, the best place to stay is close to your clinic, in a quiet neighborhood, with a kitchen, room to rest and a team you can reach. This dental tourism guide to Medellín explains where to stay, how long to plan for and how to vet your provider.

Why is Medellín a top destination for dental and medical tourism?

Medellín combines experienced hospitals, specialist clinics and dental practices used to treating international patients. According to the Medellín Chamber of Commerce for Antioquia, institutions reporting to its Medellín Health City Cluster treated 24,384 international patients in 2025, up from 23,323 in 2024.

Diagnostics (45%), specialist consultations (17%) and ophthalmology (13%) lead demand; dentistry and plastic surgery are also part of the city's offer. North America sends roughly 29% of those patients. The CDC also notes that dental care is the most common form of medical tourism among U.S. residents, partly because of rising dental costs at home.

Three common dental treatments and what they involve

  • In-office whitening: the quickest; it can often be done in a single appointment.
  • Smile design and veneers: a cosmetic assessment, tooth preparation and lab work.
  • Implants: oral surgery plus months of healing before the final restoration.

Where should you stay in Medellín for dental work?

Stay close to your clinic, in a quiet neighborhood, somewhere with a kitchen, room to rest and a team that answers when you need something. Laureles, on Medellín's west side, fits that brief: it's residential, walkable and leafy, with dental practices a 5 to 10-minute drive from Segundo Parque de Laureles.

A common mistake is booking on price or nightlife alone: while recovering you spend far more time in your room, eat differently and want short rides to your follow-ups. Torn between neighborhoods? Read our guide to where to stay in Medellín: Laureles vs El Poblado.

What your accommodation needs for a smooth recovery

  • A real kitchen: for soups, purées or smoothies if you're put on a soft-food diet.
  • Quiet nights: a residential street beats being steps from the bars.
  • Space for a companion: a large bed or, better still, a separate living area.
  • A front desk that can arrange things: airport transfers, rides to appointments and luggage storage.
  • Daylight: a balcony makes rest days far more bearable.

A short-term rental gives you a kitchen, but not always someone to call when something goes wrong. See our comparison of an aparthotel vs a hotel vs an apartment in Medellín.

How long should you stay for each treatment?

It depends on the procedure and on what your specialist recommends. In-office whitening can be done in one visit; porcelain veneers usually take two appointments separated by lab time; and implants need months of healing, so they almost always mean two trips. Ask for a written treatment timeline before you book flights.

TreatmentTypical processWhat it means for your trip
In-office whiteningA session of about 30 minutes may be enough.A short stay, plus a spare day for a check-up.
Porcelain veneersTwo visits: preparation and impressions, then bonding; the lab can take a few weeks.Several weeks or two trips; ask about lab turnaround.
Dental implantsImplant placement, around three months of healing, then the crown; the whole process can take 6 to 12 months.Usually two trips: surgery, then the final restoration.
Cosmetic surgery on the face, eyelids or noseThe American Society of Plastic Surgeons, cited by the CDC, recommends waiting 7 to 10 days before flying. At least 7 to 10 days, plus follow-ups.
Chest or abdominal surgeryThe CDC advises against flying for 10 days, and up to 14 after major chest surgery. Two weeks or more, depending on how you heal.

These are planning benchmarks, not medical advice: your specialist decides when you're fit to fly, so build in a buffer before your return flight.

How do you check that a clinic or dentist is legit in Colombia?

Before paying any deposit, confirm that the clinic is licensed in REPS, the Colombian Ministry of Health's register of authorized healthcare providers, and that your dentist or surgeon is listed in ReTHUS, the national health-professional registry. Licensing is mandatory; health accreditation is voluntary and signals higher quality standards.

  1. Search REPS. The Ministry of Health provider search is in Spanish, but your browser's translate feature works well. Log in as a guest (username and password: invitado), then search by name, tax ID (NIT) or city, and check that your specific service is licensed at the location where you'll be treated.
  2. Look up the professional in ReTHUS. Search by name or ID number to see whether a doctor or dentist has been sanctioned by an ethics tribunal.
  3. Ask about accreditation. In Colombia it's granted by ICONTEC; international seals include Joint Commission International.
  4. Get everything in writing: the treatment plan, number of visits, what the price covers and what happens if something needs adjusting.
  5. See your own doctor at least 4 to 6 weeks before the trip, as the CDC recommends for medical tourists, and pack copies of your medical records plus your medications in their original packaging.

Recovering in Laureles: what everyday life looks like

Laureles is a residential neighborhood on Medellín's west side, known for tree-lined streets, circular avenues, parks and neighborhood cafés. For a recovery stay, that means short trips, food within a few steps and gentle walks once your specialist gives the go-ahead, with quieter nights than Provenza or Parque Lleras in El Poblado.

Eating well on a soft-food diet

Having a kitchen lets you follow post-op eating instructions to the letter: soft, lukewarm meals on your own schedule. On days you'd rather not cook, Oasis, a healthy-food spot at Baratza Mall about a 7-minute walk from the hotel, gives Living by Armóniko guests 15% off.

What to save for after you're cleared

The CDC warns that typical vacation activities can delay or impede healing. While you recover, put these on hold:

  • Alcohol and strenuous exercise.
  • Sunbathing and swimming.
  • Full-day road trips out of Medellín.

How should you plan arrival, appointments and your flight home?

Arrange your transfer from José María Córdova International Airport in Rionegro before you fly, schedule appointments with spare days before your return flight, and use the hotel's luggage storage if you land before the 3:00 p.m. check-in or leave after the 12:00 p.m. check-out.

  • Arrival: the airport sits in Rionegro, about 35 km by road southeast of Medellín. Living by Armóniko arranges transfers on prior request; send your flight date and time on WhatsApp.
  • Appointments: you can also book the hotel's hourly transportation service on WhatsApp for one-off trips, such as getting to and from your clinic. Transportation isn't included in the room rate.
  • Sedation: ask the clinic whether you'll need someone to accompany you afterwards, and keep that day free of plans.
  • Flying home: the CDC points out that air travel and surgery each raise the risk of blood clots; agree on your flight date with your specialist.
